
Biography
Laura Liggett Linney was born in New York City on February 5, 1964. Her father is playwright Romulus Linney, and although her parents divorced when she was an infant and she grew up living with her mother, the New York theater scene had a profound influence on Laura Linney during her formative years. She attended Northwestern University for a year before transferring to Brown University. After graduating from Brown in 1986, she went on to study acting at Julliard, and graduated from that institution in 1990.
Laura Linney launched her acting career on the Broadway stage in the early '90s, appearing in productions of Six Degrees of Separation and Hedda Gabler, for which she won a Joe A. Callaway Award in 1994. In addition to her theater work, she landed bit parts in a number of feature films, including Lorenzo's Oil (1992), Searching for Bobby Fischer and Dave (both 1993). Her breakthrough role as Mary Anne Singleton in the PBS mini-series Tales Of The City (1994) led to her appearance in the sequels More Tales Of The City (1998) and Further Tales Of The City (2001).
